Definition:

  • A selective school is a government public high school that specifically caters to academically gifted students.

Types of Selective Schools in NSW:

  1. Partially Selective Schools:

  • Academically gifted students are placed in separate classes for English, Mathematics, and Science.

  • Other subjects are attended with local students who live in the area.

  • By Year 10, all students are integrated and reorganized based on their revised academic level.

  1. Fully Selective Schools:

  • Only academically gifted students are enrolled.

  • All subjects are catered to these students from entry until Year 12.

Location and Zoning:

  • Predominantly partially-selective schools are found in Western Sydney.

  • Selective schools do not follow zoning regulations, so students can attend schools outside their local area without disadvantage.

Benefits of Selective Schools:

  • Students interact with peers of similar academic abilities, fostering a competitive and stimulating learning environment.

  • Increased chances of achieving a higher ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) due to the scaling system.

  • ATAR is a score used in Australia to determine university course eligibility.

  • A higher ATAR provides students with more opportunities to choose their preferred university courses.

Popularity:

  • Selective schools are highly sought after by parents for the enhanced academic environment and better opportunities for their children to achieve high ATAR scores.
